Answer:

4 km

Explanation:

Assume after x minutes Ajay will be able to catch the thief.

speed of Thief = 6km/ hr = (6/60) km/min

Speed of Ajay = 8 km /hr = (8/60) km /min

At time x both must have travelled equal distance

note Ajay will be starting 10 minutes late so he will be running for (x-10) minutes.

 \frac{6}{60}  \times x =  \frac{8}{60}  \times (x - 10)

6x = 8x - 80

8x - 6x = 80

2x = 80

x = 40

After 40 minutes Ajay will be able to catch thief.

Distance covered by Ajay = (8/60)×(40-10) = 4 km
