Answer:

A car travels 100km. The journey takes 2 hours. The highest speed of the car is 80km/h, and the lowest speed is 40km/H. What is the average speed for the journey?

Solution: Average speed = 100 km/2 hours 50 kmph. Answer

Travelling 80 km/hr it covered x km or the time was x/80 hours.

Travelling 40 km/hr it covered (100-x) km or the time was (100-x)/40 hours.

Now x/80 + (100-x)/40 = 2, or

x/80 + (100-x)*2/80 = 2, or

x+200–2x = 160

40 = x

So the car covered 40 km at a speed of 80 kmph and it took 0.5 hours. The remaining 60 km were covered at a speed of 40 kmph and it took 1.5 hours

So the average speed = (40+60)/(0.5+1.5) = 100/2 = 50 kmph. Correct.
