The salinity of water in the Bay of Bengal is very low.

This is because the bay receives lot of freshwater in the form of rain and from the runoff of the surrounding rivers: Ganga, Brahmaputra, Irrawady, Godawari and others.

This is so much that, if all the freshwater that the bay receives during the year be spread uniformly over the entire surface, it would form a layer over a metre thick.
