Humayun's trusted officer Bairam Khan was made regent. Soon after Akbar became king, Hemu, a general of the Sur dynasty, occupied Agra and Delhi. In the same year,1556, Bairam Khan defeated and killed Hemu in the second battle of Panipat and reoccupied Delhi and Agra.
