Akbar defeated the Rajput Kings but did not humiliate them. He took them as equal partners. Because of the graciousness shown, several rulers joined the Mughals at that point, voluntarily. They also married their daughters into Mughal families and received high positions. This helped in strengthening and enlarging the Mughal Empire without military conflicts.

On the other hand, Aurangzeb humiliated Shivaji, the Marathas chief, when he came to his court. This paved the way for a series of wars between Mughals and Marathas between 1680 to 1707, ultimately leading to humiliating defeat for the Aurangzeb. He lost, in spite of having a far more powerful army and a bigger number of soldiers than the Marathas.

Out of the two of course, the previous policy strengthened the empire.
