Akbar's philosophy of secularism had helped him to gain the loyalty of his subjects and further helped in the expansion of his territories in various ways:

  • Akbar realised that he required the backing of minor kingdoms, particularly Rajputs, to extend and strengthen the Mughal Empire.
  • He attempted to acquire Rajput loyalty in a variety of ways, including, matrimonial alliance. He married a number of Rajput princesses.
  • Raja Todar Mal served as his revenue minister, and Raja Mansingh and Birbal were in his court.
  • The tax on Hindus was abolished.
  • He put an end to the practice of forcing people to convert to Islam.
