Well, quite a few reasons actually:
First of all, he was not peaceful. He declared war on almost all the states he bordered in India at some point, and greatly expanded Mughal territory. But it was mostly because, once he took over another country, he allowed freedom of religion, which was unlike of most muslim despots in the past.
He was a far-sighted man and knew that to firm his grip on the subcontinent, he had to allow religious tolerance. Pretty good for an illiterate man huh?
