Al. Read the passage and answer the questions that follow:
(1x8=8)
I lived with Indian friends old & new I realized that all the ills of India could have been mended easily if
there had been a government whose purpose was first of all to benefit the people rather than to live upon
them. The dry country, forexample, the fruitless land between Mumbai &Chennai, was already famished,
although it was only February. The sun was hot enough & any seed could grow, if there had been
water .And why was no water? Why not sink tube wells, or even dig shallow wells, since I was told the
water level was high? But the people were weak and exhausted. They didn't have the strength or will to do
so after the years of foreign rule. It was even more than that. The worst of foreign rule is that the people do
not work to help themselves. There were always the British to blame . The blame was not always just,
butlargely it was just. When the heart of the people is gone, their spirit too dies with it.
