there are a couple of things you need to convert aluminium and oxygen into ruby . you need a little chromium to get the red color. convincing the aluminium to react with oxygen is a no-brainer . Aluminum is so reactive that it happens almost instantaneoysly . The trick is getting the crystal structure that you want.......

Remember that the difference between graphite, Bucky balls , carbon nanotubes , and diamond is the way that the atoms are arranged . otherwise they are chemically identical.......
