Given : Alan started walking from a point 'P' towards north and walked 30 metres.

He then turned left and walked 40 metres and reached 'Q'.

To Find : Minimum straight line distance between P and Q

and in which direction is the point Q from P

Solution:

              NORTH

WEST                  EAST

             SOUTH

30 m  North

Left from North means West

40 m  West

Distance = √30² + 40²  =  √900 + 1600

= √2500

= 50 m

Q  is in  North West direction from P

Approximate 37°   North of West
