- he did not find any comfort at his lodgings as the food was extremely bad and there were dirt and squalor everywhere.
- also, the poor quarter where he was lodged had an immensely bad atmosphere of slum.
- the land lady used to beat her children regularly and on Saturdays, her husband would come drunk and beat her
- all this made him hate his lodging too.
