ALCOHOLS, PHENOLS AND ETHERS

Plancess  February 8, 2014  Tips & Tricks  No Comments

Alcohols, Phenols and ethers is widely regarded to be the most important topic in JEE after aldehydes and ketones. It is fairly interesting to read and contains many concepts that might force the student to think and ponder upon. However, it also contains many equations that you need to memorize in order to do well in the exam and it is a big problem for many aspirants. This article contains some tips and tricks which might be useful for the aspirants to overcome various problems.
1) Use the NCERT books to get an idea of the summary of these topics. Almost all the important reactions and concepts can be found out from these books .Although some of them are not properly explained and most of reactions are shown without the mechanism, But nevertheless, the can be very useful for sorting out the important material from the large amount of irrelevant concepts taught in the class.
2) Visualize the reactions happening with the help of various models taught and try to comprehend the reasons like why a particular product if more favourable than others. Ask questions to yourself and try to get their answers on the basis of the elementary concepts taught. Do not try to just memorize all the stuff without really understanding what is actually happening.
3) Use compendiums which contain the necessary concepts and try to revise them frequently. The use of various large textbooks for the purpose (which is very popular among students) should be avoided as much as possible. They contain too many concepts which are usually taught at higher levels and are of no use for JEE.
4) Practice a lot of questions from sources other than NCERT also. This helps in developing speed and predicting the various directions in case of a new reaction.
These are the basic concepts to follow while studying this chapter, but they can be modified accordingly to suit the style of the student. Have confidence in yourself and you will easily excel in this chapter.
