Answer:

James is 35 years old.

Step-by-step explanation:

Alex + James = 29

Oliver is 8 years older than Alex, that is, Oliver = Alex + 8

Also, 16 years from now, Oliver will be 18. Thus, Oliver + 16 = 18 => Oliver = 2 years old.

Hence, 2 = Alex + 8 => Alex = -6 years old. (I know it's a little contradicting, but that's that. I can't deny the fact that Alex's age is -ve 'cause that's what the math offered.)

Hence, Alex is presently -6 years old.

And the fact that, Alex and James together makes up a total of 29. Alex + James = 29

James = 29 - Alex = 29-(-6) = 35.

Henceforth, James is 35 years old.
