Those substances whose smell changes in acidic or basic solutions are called olfactory indicators. An olfactory indicator usually works on the principle that when an acid or base is added to it, then it's ' characteristics smell' cannot be detected. Example:- Onion and vanilla extract are olfactory indicators.

ONION:- Onion has a characteristics smell. When a basic solution like sodium hydroxide solution is added to a cloth strip treated with onions, then the onion smell cannot be detected. An acidic solution like Hydrochloric acide doesn't destroy the smell of onion. This can be used as a test for acids and bases.

(2) Vanilla:- Vanilla extract has a characteristics pleasant smell. If a basic solution like Sodium hydroxide solution is added to vanilla extract, then we can't detect the characteristics smell of vanilla. Take an example of acid when an acidic solution like Hydrochloric acid , is added then the smell of vanilla does not destroy. This can be used as a test for acids and BASES
