Algae and Fungi form a unique association in which they both are benefitted in some way. This mutual relationship is known as Symbiosis.

  • The Algae behaves like a Phycobiont which means it provided food to the fungi.

  • In return, the fungi provides water and minerals to Algae along with shelter to live. Fungi is the mycobiont.

The resultant organism formed by this association is known as Lichen. It is mostly found in hilly regions in the barks of the tree. It is a natural sulphur dioxide pollution indicator. It is used for the preparation of litmus paper.

Do you know☘️? Fungi sometimes shows Parasitism within the relationship when it doesn't get enough food from the algae, it consumes the algae itself. Kinda terrible !!

Other such associations includes Mychorriza, Rhizobium and the root nodules, some fungi and roots of higher plants etc.
