How do algae and fungi benefit each other? Algae and fungi live in close association called LICHEN and as you said they benefit each other. This association is called mutualism or symbiosis.

Algae and Fungi form a unique association in which they both are benefitted in some way. This mutual relationship is known as Symbiosis.

• The Algae behaves like a Phycobiont which means it provided food to the fungi.

• In return, the fungi provides water and minerals to Algae along with shelter to live. Fungi is the mycobiont.

The resultant organism formed by this association is known as Lichen. It is mostly found in hilly regions in the barks of the tree. It is a natural sulphur dioxide pollution indicator. It is used for the preparation of litmus paper.
