Algae lead to the death of aquatic species (eutrophication)

Explanation:

  • Eutrophication occurs when the water body becomes enriched with nutrients .
  • This leads to excessive growth of algae called algal blooms.
  • Some algae can produce toxins that are harmful to higher forms of life
  • This can cause problems along the food chain and affect any animal that feeds on them
  • It is predominantly caused by use of nitrate and phosphate fertilizers, industrial waste into water bodies etc.
  • Algal bloom leads to the increase in BOD as a result aquatic plants and animals may die.
  • It can be prevented by reducing the source of nutrients , reducing fertilizers input, phosphate stripping at sewage treatment works , introducing buffer strips of vegetation adjacent to water bodies.
