Solution :-

given that,

→ an = 3n - 8

putting n = 1,

→ a1 = 3 * 1 - 8 = 3 - 8 = (-5)

→ a2 = 3 * 2 - 8 = 6 - 8 = (-2)

So,

→ common difference = a2 - a1 = (-2) - (-5) = (-2) + 5 = 3

then,

→ an = a + (n - 1)d

→ a5 = a + 4d

→ a5 = (-5) + 4 * 3

→ a5 = 12 - 5

→ a5 = 7 (Ans.)
