A=3J equation (1) since Ali is 3 times James’ age.
A+3=5/2 (J+3) equation (2)
In 3 years, Ali will be two and half times James’ age. I decided to write 5/2 instead of 2.5 to make it easier.
Substitute in 3J for the A in equation (2).
3J+3=5/2 (J+3)
Multiply the 2 over to get rid of the fraction.
2(3J+3) = 5(J+3)
6J+6 = 5J+15
Rearrange to get the J’s on one side and numbers on the other.
J=9
Ali is 3 times James’s age so A = 27
James is 9 years old and Ali is 27.
