Given  :  Alica has 5 real numbers a < b < c < d < e.

She takes the sum of each pair of numbers and writes down the ten sums. The three smallest sums are 32, 36, 37

while the two largest sums are 51 and 48.

To find :  the value of 2e.

Solution:

a + b  = 32

a +  c  = 36

b + c  = 37

(a + b) + ( a + c) - ( b + c)  = 32 + 36 - 37

=> 2a = 31

a = 15.5

b = 16.5

c  = 21.5

c   + e =  48

=> e =  26.5

=> 2e  = 53

the value of 2e   = 53
