The glandular epithelium produces mucous.
Explanation:
- A layer of epithelial cells which are interspersed by secretory cells (endocrine or exocrine) form a Glandular epithelium.
- The alimentary canal is lined by a glandular epithelium which are interspersed by mucus secreting cells.
- These mucus secreting cells are called the Goblet cells.
- The mucus has many function :
- It keeps the alimentary canal moist so that the bolus and the digested food can easily pass through it without any friction. Hence the canal lining is protected from getting ruptured.
- In the stomach it protects the epithelial cells from getting destroyed by the corrosive action of hydrochloric acid.
- It mixes with the food and keeps it soft so that the digestive enzymes can easily act on them.
