Alkali metal in period 3 that dissolves in water giving a strong alkali. The answer is sodium, but i dont know how or why. Plz explain

sodium metal react rapidly with water to form a colourless solution of sodium hydroxide. the resulting solution is basic because of dissolved hydroxide. the reaction is exothermic.
