Alkali Metals are soft but whey they combine with non metals form hard crystalline solids why?

Alkali metals are soft because of weak inter-mettalic bonding in their kernels.........
But they become crystalline when bonded with a non-metal due to strong electrostatic force of attraction which prevents them from becoming soft and hence they are hard and can't be cut with a knife.
