Group 2 of the periodic table comprises of alkaline earth metals .

And those are

Be

Mg

Ca

Sr

Ba

Ra

If we talk about Magnesium

then its electronic configuration will be like :

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2

since the ultimate shell has only two electrons only they will participate in bond formation.

Thus they are bivalent in nature .
