ICSE - 10....

alkanes or paraffins are the organic compounds which have single bonds in their vicinty.

the carbon atom has equally shared single bonds.

alkanes show only substitution reaction, as they have all their single bonds satisfied and thus, are chemically less reactive or inert.

they only get oxidised like any other organic compound.

substitution reaction involves ....

CH4+4Cl2------> CCl4+4HCl

and you can individually react one chlorine atom or any other halogen like this.

CH4+ Cl2 ------> CH3Cl + HCl

CH3Cl + Cl2 ------> CH2Cl2 + HCl

CH2Cl2 + Cl2 --------> CHCl3 + HCl

CHCl3 + Cl2 -------------> CCl4 + HCl
