Wurtz reaction cannot be used for the preparation of alkanes of odd number carbon. Because alkanes which are produced in the reaction have a double number of carbon atoms to the alkyl halides taken.
And if two dissimilar alkyl halides are taken as the reactants, then a mixture of alkanes is obtained as the product.
For the preparation of alkanes containing an odd number of carbon atoms, two different alkyl halides are taken and two different alkyl halides can react in three different ways.
Therefore, a mixture of alkanes is produced.
Hope this will prove helpful.
