water molecules are bonded to each other by hydrogen bonds.
also molecules of alkyl halides have forces of attraction between them.
so inorder to break the existing bonds, energy is required and the energy released when new interaction are formed is lesser than what is required to break the existing interactions.so alkyl halides are insoluble in water.

hope this helps you.
