Explanation:
In an interrogative sentence, the tense changes in the same way as in an indirect statement except that the verb said (or any other declarative words used as the reporting verb) is changed into asked, inquired, enquired of, queried, questioned, wanted to know, tried to find out, demanded of and so on.
Eg: The teacher said, "where do you live?" - Direct
Eg: The teacher asked me where I lived. - indirect
A direct question which begins with a question word such as what, when, why, where, how or which will also have the question word in the indirect speech.
Eg: Hamid asked Seema , "How did you fare in your test? " (direct)
Eg: Hamid asked Seema how she had fared dinner test. (indirect )
When there is no question word used in the direct speech, we use whether or if in the indirect narration.
Eg: My Teacher said to me, "did you take notes?" (direct)
Eg: My teacher asked me if I had taken notes. (Or)
My teacher asked me whether I had taken notes. (indirect)
Changes in pronouns when we report speech:
I → He/she
You → I/me
Me → Him/her
Us → them
you → we/us
my → his/her
mine→ his/hers
your(s) → our(s)
our(s) → their(s)
Eg: Pailey said," you can see us anytime" .
→ Pailey said that I could see them anytime.
Remember: The tense of verb does not change if it's a universal truth.
Eg: The teacher said, "the Earth rotates on its axis."
Eg: The teacher said that the Earth rotates on its axis.
Explanation:
Direct speech is a report of the exact words used by a speaker or writer. The words spoken appear within inverted commas “......” and should be exactly word to word as spoken or written.
Example
ExampleThe teacher said to the students, “You can go.”
INDIRECT SPEECH
When we report what someone said in our own words, it is called Indirect speech. We do not use inverted commas, do not write the exact words as spoken or written by someone.
Example
The teacher said to the students that they could go.
