because they have only 1 valence electron in their last shell(Eg: Na-2,8,1) and so it is easiest for them tho lose an electron due to weak nuclear pull. So they lose an electron to attain noble gas configuration and be oxidised as oxidising in easy words means to lose electrons and they reduce the non metal to which they give an electron as reducing means gaining electron. So they are good reducing agents.
