In coalition era, tourism department regains lost powersBindiya Chari| TNN | Jun 22, 2017, 12.42 PM ISTPANAJI: The tourism department, which was relegated to a subservient status in 2013 after the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) was granted a "special purpose vehicle" (SPV) status, is likely to regain its powers soon.
The Cabinet on Wednesday gave nod to modify GTDC's work ambit. Now, promotion and marketing services will no longer remain in its domain. The State Level Marketing Committee, which was aiding it in its marketing efforts, will be entirely handled by the tourism department.
Also, the pattern of assistance for GTDC, framed in 2010, would be revoked. The latest decision has its roots in the coalition politics compulsion, a source said.
Tourism Minister, Manohar 'Babu' Azgaonkar apparently wasn't happy as the GTDC enjoyed more clout it being a SPV even though he headed the tourism ministry, a source said.
The corporation is headed by BJP's Curchorem MLA, Nilesh Cabral. He handled the same earlier when Dilip Parulekar was the tourism minister. The arrangement "worked as both belonged to the same party."
Besides, marketing and promotion activities, GTDC used to implement all tourism related infrastructure projects through funds received from the tourism department.
In fact, after granting SPV status to the corporation, tourism department's role was curtailed to a large extent, and it became more of a policy making body. The GTDC retains its power to execute tourism infrastructure projects, nonetheless.
