the fact is that when there is a bond formation energy is released and when a bond breaks energy is absorbed

energy is also released when nutralisation happens and also when it appears to happen

neutralisation appears to happen when a strong acid/base reacts with water .In that case water appears to be a base/acid respectively

as all combination reaction the bond formation is larger than breaking of bonds they are exothermic in nature

ex   CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂

but reactions like NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H₂O     are also exothermic

the underlining fact is that if the amount of bond formation is greater than the amount breaking bond then the reaction is exothermic

NOTE : amount of bond formation does not mean the numerical number of bonds formed

hope this helps
