The fire triangle is made up of these 3 elements oxygen,fuel,heat. by taking away any of the 3 the fire can't burn.(there is another element in some situations but as you only mentioned 3 will work with these). now to put out a fire you would have to take away one of the elements (at lest one) so by small fires you can use a chocking blanket not letting the fire get the oxygen it needs. by bigger fire you usually use water to cool down the substance the fire is burning on and so on....
