There are two kidneys in humanbeings. Internally a kidney is made up of numerous microscopic excretory units called nephron. Single kidney contains about a million nephrons. The main function of kidney is filtration of blood to excrete the waste.
Each nephron has a cup shaped upper end called bowman's capsule. It contains a bundle of blood capillaries called glomerulus. The blood in the glomerulus comes from aorta through renal arteries and returns to venacava through renal veins. The blood entering into the glomerulus carries waste materials which are filtered out in the bowman's capsule. The filtered out fluid is called glomerular filtrate. This glomerular filtrate contains sodium, potassium, glucose, aminoacids, chloride irons, urea, uric acid and large amount of water.
The bowman's capsule is situated at the proximal end of nephron. The filtration of blood takes place inside the bowman's capsule.
