Some microorganisms are not harmful, in fact, some are quite helpful (like the bacteria that is found in your gut). But a majority of them cause a lot of diseases in man and other organisms. Microorganisms include bacteria, algae, fungi, archaea, and protozoa.

Some microbes can be harmful to humans and can cause disease; the Influenza virus can cause the flu, Campylobacter bacteria can make us ill through food poisoning and the dermatophyte fungi such as Trichophyton can cause diseases such as Athlete's foot and Ringworm. Microbes such as these are known as pathogens.
