It is not necessary that the larger organisms have a large number of chromosomes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. However, there are smaller organisms which have more than 23 chromosomes. For example, a horse has 32 pairs of chromosome. Ichthyomys pittieri, a water-loving rodent has 47 pairs of chromosomes.
