Because photosynthesis occurs during day time (presence of sunlight) . During this time oxygen is released. Some oxygen used for respiration and the rest diffused into the air.

Carbon dioxide also released during this time used for photosynthesis. But at night time there's no photosynthesis , no oxygen evolved. Carbon-di-oxide produced during respiration diffuses into air.

So, the carbon-di-oxide is released not only in night time but all time.
