All chemical equations must be balanced so as to satisfy THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS. which states that:-

Mass can neither be created nor be destroyed in a chemical reaction.

So, the total number of atoms of one element on left hand side should be equal to Toatal number of atoms of the same element on right hand side..
