There are various types of winds that prevail in India
(1) Permanent or Planetary winds
(2) Periodic winds
(3) Local winds
(4) Cyclones and Anticyclones (Westerlies)
(5)Mountain and valley Breezes
(6) Seasonal Winds
Explanation:
- Local Winds: The local winds are truly local. They occur over a much smaller scale of land and are linked to the local topography. They blow for a short time & are triggered by the "physical form" of the land, or the proximity to a water body producing a certain air movement. The local winds of Kalbaisakhi (western Bengal), Loo (northern India) are examples.
- Planetary Winds: They are also known as dominant winds or permanent winds blow continually throughout the year in the same line. From the "high pressure belt" they blow to the "low pressure belts". Three major forms of planetary winds exist, namely the commercial winds, the west & the east. These winds are named as per the direction they come from.
- Westerlies: These winds are unpredictable and they are not as strong and steady as the trade winds. A frequent "cyclone & anti-cyclone" is a typical "westerly wind belt". The sub-tropical high pressure belt blows to the "sub polar lower pressure belt 30 degree "north & south" of the "Equator". They blow from "SW to NE" in the "northern hemisphere". " "NW to SE" is the direction in the "southern hemisphere".
- Periodic Winds: These are the winds blow at a comparatively smaller scale to the planetary winds. The planetary winds comprise (1) "Land & Sea Breezes" (2) Monsoons.
- Seasonal Winds: Seasonal winds blow in a particular season. These winds have a seasonal rhythm. The best example of this is Monsoon. This season of winds is experienced in "eastern & southern" Asia. The rapid heating of land because of the "hot summer" over most parts of India causes the "hot air" to rise. The "winds" in the "surrounding seas & oceans" are "moisture laden"; they "blow in & bring torrential rainfall"
- Polar winds: They are more "variable" in their "direction & strength", in the "Northern Hemisphere" than in the "Southern Hemisphere" "weather disturbances" than in the "Southern Hemisphere". They blow from the "Polar High Pressure belt" ("90 degree N & S of the Equator") to the "subpolar" Low Pressure belt ("60 degrees N & S of the Equator").
- Mountain and Valley Breezes: These breezes form through a process similar to "sea & land" breezes. In the day, the "sun heats" up valley air rapidly whereas the mountain stays comparatively cooler. "Convection" causes it to "rise", causing a "valley breeze". At night, this process is reversed.
