All the members of the club were united for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the club.

- The quoted part of the sentence was , "were assembled to celebrate".

- In this quoted part ,there are four words :

1) Were = auxiliary verb

2) Assembled = verb

3) & 4) To celebrate = another verb

- First of all,we keep the auxiliary verb same in the modified sentence, because changing this auxiliary verb can affect the tense of the sentence which is not desired.

- Then we replaced the 'assembled' verb by the 'united' verb.

United and assembled are mostly synonyms.

- At last we replaced the 'to celebrate' by the noun form of celebrate,in the form of, 'for the celebration'.

In this way we got our transformed sentence without changing the main meaning of the initial sentence.
