Answer:
The Romans bestowed the names of gods and goddesses on the five planets that could be seen in the night sky with the naked eye. Jupiter, the solar system's biggest planet, was named for the king of the Roman gods, while the reddish color of the planet Mars led the Romans to name it after their god of war.

All of the planets, but for Earth, have been named after Roman & Greek "gods & goddesses". Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, & Mercury were given their names 1000s of years ago. The other planets, however, were not discovered till much later, that is after telescopes were invented. The tradition of naming the planets after Roman & Greek "gods & goddesses" continued for the other planets which were discovered later through telescopes.
Explanation:
- "Mercury" was is the "Roman god" of "travel". "Venus" is the "Roman goddess" of "beauty & love".
- "Mars" was the "Roman god" of "War". "Jupiter" was the "king" of the "Roman gods," & "Saturn" was the "Roman god" of "agriculture".
- "Uranus" was an "ancient Greek king" of the "gods". "Neptune" was the "Roman god" of the "Sea".
- Pluto, now classified as a "dwarf planet", was the "Roman god" of the "under-world". The name Earth, however, is an "English/German" name which simply implies "the ground".
