All variations will not provide survival advantage. Only the variations that adapt to the new environmental change survive.
eg: in the red beetle population there were some green beetles due to variation.Now many red beetles started to be picked up by the crows due to their colour where as green beetles are save because they cannot be found out due to their green colour !

Bcos some of the variations can be so drastic that the DNA could not work with cellular apparatus it inherent and thus leads to death of the organism
