chordates are the animals which have a notochord. while, vertebrates are animals with notochord only in embryonic stage and is replaced by a vertebral column. so, not all chordates necessarily have a vertebral column (As in the subphyla urochordata and cephalochordata) but all vertebrates are chordates as all vertebrae are developed after degeneration of the notochord.

Answer:
- The characteristic features of the phylum, Chordata, include the presence of a notochord and paired pharyngeal gill slits.
- In sub-phylum Vertebrata, the notochord present in embryos gets replaced by a cartilaginous or bony vertebral column in adults.
- Thus, it can be said that all vertebrates are chordates but all chordates are not vertebrates.
