Alloys
An alloy is a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals or a metal and a
non-metal. It is prepared by melting the metal and dissolving other
elements in it, in a definite proportionery
Alloys have better properties than the metals from which they are
formed. Different alloys of the same metal can be made by mixing it
with different components in various proportions.
Stainless steel
For example, gold is a very soft metal and cannot be used in its pure state for making
jewellery. It is usually mixed with a metal like copper or silver to make it harder and
suitable for making jewellery.
