Alloys are homogeneous mixture of metals with other metals or metals with non metals. The process of making an alloy includes mixing of a metal into the primary metal in fixed proportions. Alloying can be used to improve the properties or to get certain properties which may not be available in commercially available independent metals. For example, iron is itself very soft. Mixing it with carbon leads it to be very strong which is desired. Similarly alloy of nickel chromium and iron (stainless steel) can be used for long time without it getting rusted
