Aphrodite told Paris before his declaration, she would get him the most beautiful woman as his bride. This made him choose her as the fairest Goddess.
However, the most beautiful woman happened to be Helen who was already married to the King of Sparta. Since there was no way she could fulfill her promise to Paris, she influenced Helen to elope with Paris. However, there are some tales that say Helen went with Paris on her own accord leaving her husband Menelaus and their young daughter.
