alternating current can not be used for electrolysis. why?

because electrolysis needs one negative and one positive terminal. transfer of electrons should be in one direction for chemical reaction which is not the case in alternating current

Ac current is not used for electrolysis because it keeps on changing its direction thus the anode and cathode keep switching and no seperation takes place.
