Behrman braves the rain for painting a leaf on the wall which looks so realistic that johnny falls prey to the deception. Though Behrman has an attack of pneumonia, doctors are able to save him and he becomes very famous for the leaf he painted.

The next day, Sue pulls up the shade, fearing that the ivy leaves have all fallen. But, there is “one lonely ivy leaf clinging against the wall.” It is enough to encourage Johnsy to fight for her life and get well. When the doctor visits, he tells Sue that Johnsy is recovering. Sadly,  Mr. Behrman has died of pneumonia. After her recovery, Sue took her to ivy plant and showed her that leaf was a painted one by Mr.Behrman for which Johnsy turned and looked Sue straight in her eyes and said"I knew this long ago" Sue was shocked Johnsy continued "You think a painter will not be able to distinguish color and contrast between a real leaf and painted one" Sue then asked why did you tell me before "I was extremely impressed with the Love and affection that someone showed on me and pain they have undergone to reproduce the same look and give me the confidence to recover."I wanted to come back for the love you have upon me".
