Hydrilla is a submerged hydrophyte. It is an excellent laboratory material to demonstrate effect of environmental factors on rate of photosynthesis.

Take a fresh leafy Hydrilla stem and cut it with a scissors under water and put it inverted in a test tube. Allow the system to rest in strong diffused light. You will see air bubbles emerging and escaping from the cut end. Count the bubbles evolved per minute (= X)

Now shift the same Hydrilla test tube in bright sun light. Count the rate of evolution of bubbles again (=Y).
