Although both CO₂ and H₂O are triatomic molecules, the shape of H₂0 molecule is bent while that of CO₂ is linear. Explain this on the basis of dipole moment.

Explanation:

The shape of H₂0 molecule is bent due to two bond pairs and two lone pair.So, according to the valence electron shell pair repulsion theory there is more attraction between lone pair and bond pairs and the resultant dipole moment leads to bent shape.

The shape of CO₂ molecule is linear due to two bond pairs and one lone pair.So, according to the valence electron shell pair repulsion theory there is  less attraction between lone pair and bond pair the resultant dipole moment leads to linear shape.
