Answer:   Plastics are used in horticulture for production, improved mechanization, and shipping. Historically plants have been grown in heavy brittle clay pots because no other material was available. That changed with introduction of lightweight molded plastics in the 1960s, allowing greenhouses, nurseries and vegetable growers to become larger, more efficient, and profitable by shipping products all over the country. It is estimated that over 400,000 tons of horticulture plastic is used in the United States yearly. Today European and North American plastic firms are reducing waste by recycling and developing compostable plastics. The plastic industry is achieving sustainability byp using bioplastic made from vegetable fats and oils, cornstarch, and soybean flour.
