Although F is more electronegative than O ,the highest Mn fluoride is MnF4 , whereas the highest oxide is is Mn2O7

- Fluorine is more electronegative than oxygen, but it only forms direct ionic bonds with Mn.
- Therefore, highest Mn fluoride is MnF4.
- Oxygen has tendency to stabilize higher oxidation states.
- Also oxygen can form multiple bonds with Mn.
- In Mn2O7, two Mn are joined by Mn-O-Mn bridge and each Mn is tetrahedrally surrounded by 3 more O atoms.
